Cleveland “outsider” artist Seth Chwast has autism. The now 34-year-old artist took a painting class at the Cleveland Museum of Art when he was 20. That unleashed a flow of creativity as he began expressing visually what he could not express verbally.

Since then the prolific artist has earned an international reputation with his vivid figurative paintings, and travelled around the world, with exhibitions in such far-flung places as Galapagos, the Cayman Islands, Kiev, Curacao, New York, Youngstown’s Butler Institute of American Art (with a major solo short in 2014) and Cleveland’s Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals. Last year Valley Arts Center in Chagrin Falls featured his work in Seth Chwast: Portrait of the Young Man as an Artist, a show in which he partnered with one of Cleveland’s most noted photographers Herb Ascherman.

Seth also collaborated with his mother, Debra Chwast, on her book, An Unexpected Life: A Mother and Son’s Story of Love, Determination, Autism and Art, for which he provided 124 paintings.

The Music Settlement will host “A Celebration of the Creativity of Seth Chwast” at its Burke Mansion in University Circle. It will include a lecture and book signing by Debra Chwast, along with a display of Seth’s artwork. It’s free and open to the public.
