PHOTOSTREAM: MLK Day at the Maltz Museum by Anastasia Pantsios

Mon 1/16

Virtually all of Cleveland’s museums hosted free days and special programming for the Dr. Martin Luther King Day holiday. But there was no more appropriate destination on that day than the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, which is currently hosting This Light of Ours, a major show of the work of nine photographers who captured all aspects of the Civil Rights Movement of the ’60s, from the daily life of poor African-Americans in the South to the protest marches met with violent force to the memorial events following the assassination of Dr. King. It even includes sample protest signs of the era, as well as those that were carried by segregationists, as well as a U.S. map that located various types of hate groups around the country in 2015. Sadly, the number has most likely exploded.

The museum was packed with both black and white people of all ages to bask in the photos, engage in some crafts activities in the lobby, and watch film and music performances in the theater.
