Nickel Creek’s Sarah Watkins Does Her Own Thing at the Kent Stage

Sarah Watkins

Tue 1/24 @ 8PM

Sarah Watkins is well known to denizens of the progressive bluegrass scene. She’s been playing bluegrass fiddle since 1989 when she was a mere child of eight. She and her older brother Sean, who played guitar, and mandolinist Chris Thile formed Nickel Creek that year. By 2000, with Sarah still in her teens, they broke out to become one of the biggest selling bands in the genre, even snagging a Grammy before they went on hiatus in 2007.

They’ve been active again since 2014 but Watkins launched her solo career during the hiatus, releasing two albums, and has continued to do her own thing as well, with the release of last year’s Young in All the Wrong Ways. She sings, she writes, she plays ukulele and guitar in addition to her first instrument, fiddle, and she even played percussion on a Decemberists album.

She’ll be playing at the Kent Stage. Singer/songwriter Liz Longley, whose music has an intimate folky vibe in the vein of Shawn Colvin or Nanci Griffith, opens the show. Tickets are $26.
