The Artists Archives of the Western Reserve, the Western Reserve Historical Society and American Greetings have joined forces to present Curve of Color: Art and Fashion of Sam Butnik and Bonnie Cashin, opening at American Greetings’ Gallery W at the nw corporate headquarters in Westlake.

Painter Samuel Butnik (1920-2004) was born in Cleveland and went to the Cleveland School of Art before his travels took him all over the country and around the world, picking up influences and evolving through many stylistic permutations. In the ’60s, he essayed a geometric style, influenced by the op-art school of artists then active in Cleveland, that moved him away from his previously figurative style.

Sportswear designer Bonnie Cashin (1908-2000) was active from the 1940s through the 1970. The Californian is often credited with popularizing east-to-wear layered clothing. In the ’60s and ’70s, she designed items for Coach that draw on some of the same bold, geometric designs that fueled Butnik’s work. The pieces in this show come from the fashion collection at the Western Reserve Historical Society.

The show runs through Thu 2/23. There is a reception Thu 1/12 from 5-7pm.
