You may think there’s nothing new in the world of opera when you see yet another Boheme or Madame Butterfly being staged. But Cleveland Opera Theater is going to prove that that’s wrong with its New Opera Works aka {NOW} festival.
The festival includes five programs taking place at Baldwin Wallace University, Oberlin College, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
It kicks off Fri 1/20 @ 8PM with the New Scenes Workshop, a collaboration with the Cleveland Composers’ Guild at Baldwin Wallace’s Kulas Music Hall. The 90-minute program will be followed by an interactive talkback. It’s repeated Sun 1/22 @ 3pm. General admission tickets are $25.
The New Opera Forum at BW’s Gamble Auditorium Sat 1/21 @ 3pm features an interactive discussion about the creation, development and performance of new opera. It will open with a performance of a scene from a new opera We’ve Got an Eye on You by Nkeiru Okoye (composer) and David Cote (librettist), followed by a discussion on ways to strengthen its impact. It’s free.
On Sun 1/22 @ 7pm at BW’s Kulas Hall, there will be a reading of Federico García Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba which is being adapted into a new opera. This event is also free.
A new opera by Larry Delinger and Brad Carroll called Amelia Lost will be performed at BW’s Kulas Hall Sat 1/21 @ 8pm and Mon 1/23 @ 8pm. Tickets are $25.
And finally, a new production of Phillip Glass’s 1986 Songs from Liquid Days, a co-production with Oberlin Opera Theater, will be performed at Oberlin’s Warner Concert Hall Fri 1/27 @ 4 and 8pm and Sat 1/28 @ 4 and 8pm, and at the Rock Hall Sun 1/29 @ 5pm. Tickets are free; VIP tickets for the Rock Hall performance are $50 and include valet parking and reserved seating as well as a post-performance cocktail reception. Tickets for the limited-capacity Oberlin performances are all gone, but the Rock Hall has more available.
