Through Sun 12/18

The Great Lakes Science Center, which now houses the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, has established a temporary memorial exhibit for the astronaut and former U.S. Center who died December 8 at the age of 95. Glenn was best known as the first American to orbit the Earth. He served in the Senate as a Democrat from Ohio from 1975-1999 and made an ill-fated run for president in 1984, when he was beaten for the Democratic nomination by Walter Mondale.

The memorial, which will be on view through Sun 12/18, will be in GLSC’s Wintergarden atrium which doesn’t require admission to the museum, during regular hours (10am-5pm). It will include a place for people to leave messages of condolence or express what Glenn meant to them.

Glenn will lie in state at the Statehouse in Columbus for public viewing from noon-8pm Fri 12/16. On Sat 12/17 from 12:30-11:55pm, he will be transferred from the Statehouse to The Ohio State University’s Mershon Auditorium where the memorial service will take place from 2-3pm with an escort platoon of U.S. Marines leading the hearse up High Street.

Tickets for the memorial service will be available to the public on a first-come/first-served basis, starting at 9am Thu 12/15 at this website: glenn.osu.edu/glenn-memorial-service/
