Three brand new Steinway grand pianos were rolled into Gilmour Academy’s Lower School as students lined the halls and clapped their appreciation.

On December 6, Gilmour began the process of becoming the first private K-12 school in the Midwest to become a Steinway Select school, meaning all 10 pianos on Gilmour’s campus will soon be replaced with a new Steinway & Sons grand piano.

Only 8 schools in the country have earned the Steinway Select K-12 designation. The purchase of Steinway & Sons pianos is made possible through a scheduled donation from Gilmour alumnus and current parent Matthew Figgie, The Figgie Foundation and Figgie Capital. “These Steinway & Sons grand pianos are yet another strategic step in the overall elevation and transformation of Gilmour Academy as one of the nation’s premier academic, artistic and athletic institutions of higher learning,” said Mr. Figgie.

Over 175 prestigious American institutions of higher learning and conservatories share the All Steinway School distinction, including Oberlin College (since 1877), Cleveland Institute of Music (since 1920), Kent State University, Youngstown State University Dana School of Music, and Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music.

That deserves a round of applause!
