Tonight is the real winter solstice, and those who feel attuned to nature may want to be outdoors to celebrate end of long nights and short days and the beginning of longer days and shorter nights.

One place to do so is at the Geauga Park District’s West Woods which is hosting its popular Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk for the 27th year. Bring the whole family to the event, which starts with hot cider and homemade cookies and holiday music by the Pilgrim Brass Choir.

Then attendees head outdoors in groups of 40-50 to walk in the woods while guides talk about how our modern holiday customs developed from older civilizations that had limited knowledge about why days got shorter and longer. Walkers will encounter luminary-lit stations where they’re hear about the myths created by those civilizations to explain the solstice, as well as where the Christmas tree, and the use of holly and mistletoe came from.

The last group departs at 9:30pm. The walk is free for all ages and registration is not required. Dress warmly!
