The Cleveland Museum of Art has its blockbuster shows. But it also has its small but revelatory shows pulled together from its own vast collection.

Pure Color: Pastels from the Cleveland Museum of Art, opening today in Gallery 101, focuses on pastels from the impressionist and post-impressionist period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when artistic exploration was at an all-time high. The Société des Pastellistes de France was founded 1885 as artists and collectors became enthralled with the medium and its ability to capture subtle color and lighting effects.

Pure Color includes the work of such artists as Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt (pictured above), Odilon Redon and Gino Severini. It will remain on view through 3/19/17.
