Tues 12/6 @ 7:30PM

The Juilliard String Quartet is one of the venerable and respected superstar ensembles among American string quartets, known for its mastery of a wide range of music, from the standard repertoire (Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Debussy, Schubert) to contemporary classical pieces.

It was formed 70 years ago, and obviously its membership has changed over the years although in that time it’s only had 15 members (including recently retired head of the Cleveland Institute of Music Joel Smirnoff, who served as both its first and second violinist).

It’s undergone some membership changes recently, with its longest-tenured member now second violinist Ronald Copes. First violinist Joseph Lin joined in 2011 and viola player Roger Tapping came on board in 2013. Its newest member is former Lark Quartet cellist Astrid Schween who joined this season to become the group’s first woman and first African-American member.

The group will perform at Shaker Heights’ Plymouth Church UCC as part of the Cleveland Chamber Music Society series. The program includes Haydn’s String Quartet in F minor, Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1 and Beethoven’s String Quartet in B-flat major. Roger Klein will do a pre-concert lecture at 6:30pm. Tickets are $30.
