Acting Out

We’re fed up. Our community had tremendous needs. But we’re not giving up. Not this year. Not this time. Instead, good folks are taking action.

Adam Rich raises money for cancer support with his LoveMuffinPalooza. Derek Hess & partner Marty Geramita are bringing together film, music, comedy and art to raise awareness of mental illness and they’re calling it ACTING OUT. The Maltz gives out $100K for the best 500 word essays on tolerance written by high schoolers with their Stop The Hate contest. You read that right.

Diana Chittester and wife Jessica Rosenblatt are back from a stint in Portland and have launched Fighting Chance Records and are offering their talents to develop the careers of other artists like Cleveland native Anne E. DeChant and Akron’s Angie Haze. The Akron Art Museum exposes our youngest budding artists to light, color and texture with their Art Babes sessions. Area chef celebrities host CMNH’s Our Global Kitchen keeping things fresh, local, seasonal and sustainable. Tracy Marie celebrates the 16th iteration of Breastfest, once again featuring an all-female music festival with proceeds benefiting breast cancer patients and their families. And our community is so deep with women musicians that none of them has played the Fest before.

Now it’s time for you to act: early voting has begun, or you can get your Vote By Mail ballot here. Confused about which judges to vote for? Use the uber-useful and impartial Judge4Yourself. Time to act up. —Thomas Mulready
