New Music Series Uptown Saturday Nights Launches at University Circle

There’ll be music all over University Circle on Saturday this fall, starting this week. Once boasting only a handful of venues — the venerable Euclid Tavern and the legendary and long-gone Brick, and later, the Barking Spider — it now has a flock of restaurants and bars capable of hosting live music.

So Case Western Reserve University, University Circle and Roots of American Music, the Cleveland Heights-based group that used music as a educational tool for underserved kids, have joined together to start a sort of weekly mini-Heights Music Hop, called the Cleveland Foundation Uptown Saturday Nights, culminating in the two-day RootsFest 10/14-15. It will feature various Americana roots music genres, including blues, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, folk, hip hop, zydeco and traditional country, for free at venues within walking distance.

During the kickoff this week, you can hear the bluegrass of Los Bob & the Ozone Rambler at the ABC Tavern, jazz from Eclectic Vision and blues-influenced guitar from Tom Shaper at the Barking Spider (which features free music seven days a week), folk/rock from FlipSide at the Corner Alley Uptown, jazz from the Eric Seddon Duo at Coquette Patisserie, the string band Down the Road at Roots Garden, Americana singer/songwriter Rebekah Jean (pictured) at the Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern and DJ Knyce at Ninja City Kitchen and Bar. There will be additional performers announced each week throughout the run of the series.
