For more than a century, the Music Settlement has been about education, offering music programs for community members of all ages and skill levels, with the goal of teaching a love and appreciation for music.

Its jazz program, Jazz @ the Music Settlement or J@MS, teaches learning through sharing. And five recent J@MS alumni are going to be doing some sharing at the Bop Stop this week when they play a one-night-only show to benefit the J@MS program.

Tenor sax player Chris Allison, drummer Langston Maxwell, bassist Ari Smith, trombonist Caleb Smith and pianist Anav Sood are all attending college or are about to start, at top-flight schools like Oberlin, Berklee and Stanford, some of them in conservatory programs on full scholarship.

“The Settlement is where I really found my passion for music, and where I learned what it means to develop as a musician,” says Sood, a Shaker Heights High School grad who will attend Stanford this fall. “The lessons I learned through the J@MS program have positively impacted all parts of my life. It’s nice to know that our performance can help do the same for other kids just like us.”

In addition to this concert, the five have already given back to the Music Settlement by volunteering at its summer music camps this summer.

Tickets for the concert are $15.
