Oriented

Wed 9/7 @ 6:30PM

Despite some major steps forward, such as 50-state marriage equality, life in the U.S. for gay people can still be difficult and dangerous depending on where they are. Now imagine how challenging it is in the Middle East.

The documentary Oriented follows the lives of three Palestinian friends in Tel Aviv dealing with not just their gay sexuality but also issues of religion and nationality, surrounded by disapproving Muslims and an increasingly militant Orthodox Judaism and facing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in general. Oy!

Case Western Reserve’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies, the LGBT Center of Greater Cleveland, the Middle Eastern Cultural Association and CWRU’s Social Justice Institute are hosting a screening of Oriented at the university’s Tinkham Veale University Center.

Afterward, there will be a discussion via Skype with Khader Abu Seif, one of the men featured in the film. It’s free and open to all. Reservations are requested: email socialjustice@case.edu or call 216-368-7568.
