PHOTOSTREAM: Arts & Politics & the American Dream at the Transformer Station by Anastasia Pantsios

Tue 7/19

Artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese came to Cleveland to install one of their ice sculptures, whose melting is part of the statement they’re making. The 4,000-pound, locally manufactured sculpture reading “The American Dream” was unveiled at 12:30pm outside Ohio City’s Transformer Station and, although it was supposed to slowly melt over 24 hours, it began collapsing a little after 4, given the heat and the humidity, which Ligorano said speeds up the melt rate.

While the ice was doing its drip-drip thing, inside the blissfully air-conditioned Transformer Station, panels of artists and arts supporters talked about the role arts and culture play in the community and their impact on politics. Afterward there was free ice cream from Mitchell’s, a “Truth” tent where people could record what matters to them, and a print-making station churning out facts on women’s status in the U.S.
