Singer/songwriter/poet Tom Adams has been knocking around the outer edges of Cleveland’s music scene for more than a decade. He was part of Cleveland’s poetry scene in the ’90s where he began toying with the idea of spoken-word poetry backed by music in the Trenchcoat Manifesto at the end of the decade. He released a CD, Which Moment, in 2005, which got good reviews but didn’t make much of a splash because he wasn’t that well known in the local music scene.

He still isn’t — he isn’t a regular in area clubs. But he’s been working to develop a sound based in Americana/roots music with blues, country, folk and rock influences underpinning his imagistic, poetry-influenced lyrics. His vocals have a raw, urgent quality, with influences of portentous, storytelling folkies like Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot.

A little over a year ago, Adams formed a band to record some of his new tunes. The band is called Tom Adams & the Last Resort; it includes lead guitarist Howard Micenmacher who became well-known to Cleveland audiences in one of the area’s pioneering Americana bands, Al’s Fast Freight, in the ’90s and more recently for his Springsteen tribute, Swamps of Jersey. Western Pennsylvania’s Goggles Pisano plays harmonica; Pittsburgher Mike Pella who played with that city’s memorable band the Silencers plays bass; and busy Ernest Richmann IV, who plays in six other bands, is on drums and percussion.

They recorded a full-length CD last summer and fall, and now Adams is preparing to share that CD, Tumblin’ Down the Hole, with Cleveland audiences. The band will perform a CD release show at the Happy Dog. The band Saul Glennon opens. Admission is $5.

  1. Trenchcoat Manifesto featured lyrics and spoken word by Tom Adams and music, arrangements and recording by Richard Hearn – a talented musician previously known for his work with Breakfast in India, Uzizi, and Angst Cafe. While the recording may not have made a “big splash”, it did get excellent reviews by your peers at Cool Cleveland http://cool.coolcleveland.com/wiki/Newsletter/CoolClevelandSoundsTrenchcoatManifesto. The music and art of this CD still stands up after 10 years. https://youtu.be/smsrvS7sr0U. One of the tracks on Tom’s new cd “Willie Nelson Don’t Wear Braids” was cowritten by Richard Hearn.

Best to Tom in exploring new genres and making his own musical sounds. See you friday at the Happy Dog!
