Water Waves 02.25 – 03.04.15

02.25-03.04.15
Water Waves

Where would we be without it? Of course, the confluence of the Cuyahoga and Erie are the reason we’re here. The largest system of fresh water is why we’ll grow. But could we run out? That’s one of the provocative questions at this year’s Hope For The City series at Old Stone Church; view our video for more. Drink Local Drink Tap is Making Waves, and we preview it here. Drink in the beverages and good vibes as we all celebrate Kent composer Halim el-Dabh’s 4094th birthday at Standing Rock.

We also tour Near West Theatre’s incredible new space in Detroit Shoreway, and introduce you to John Corlett, the new director of the Center for Community Solutions, via a video shot at Gypsy Beans in Gordon Square, just a few blocks from his home. We offer a heads up on Cleveland’s latest online radio station, stationed at 78th Street Studios, while remembering Cleveland’s African-American History, and giving a heads up to the Cleveland Young Women’s IoT Innovation Olympiad, helping them just a bit to swim against the current. We’re positively awash with music, from Roland Paolucci at Blu Jazz Akron, to the Westerlies at the Bop Stop to Jesse Cook at The Kent Stage to Bang On A Can All-Stars at Oberlin to Miss Tess & The Talkbacks at the Music Box.

Making waves and keeping an even keel is Mansfield Frazier, commenting on everything from Mayor Frank “Stonewall” Jackson to the Democratic Party. Let’s hope we can all keep our heads above the waves this week. –Thomas Mulready

John Corlett, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Center for Community Solutions, has lived in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood for almost 25 years, so it was logical for CoolCleveland to meet with him at Gypsy Beans and Baking Company at West 65th & Detroit.

While the research and policy papers that CCS delivers are hugely useful to policy makers, politicians and community leaders, it’s a passion to help the underserved that drives Corlett.

He talks about the recent resurgence of our region and his own neighborhood, but also points out that the recovery has not touched everyone, and that there is much work to be done to ensure adequate behavioral and reproductive health care, HIV/AIDS resources, and vital services to those in need. The project consisted of the screening of the documentary “American Promise,” in addition to subsequent meetings with students and educators.

The project helped to evoke conversations on closing the African-American male achievement gap as well as practical strategies for parents. Guest speaker Hilary Beard, co-author of “Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life,” led a Q & A at Shaker Heights High School after the screening.

Issues surrounding police brutality have certainly captured the Zeitgeist, at least for the nonce in Cleveland, and proposed changes in regards to how our police department operates are being floated by a number of well meaning civil rights, legal and faith-based organizations…

More coverage from Mansfield Frazier:

* Who Finally Woke These Dudes Up?: One thing I can virtually guarantee you: If any of the past, present or future victims of police brutality in Cleveland — and most likely anywhere else in the United States — had, have, or will have a political party affiliation, it’s a lead pipe cinch that the Donkey is (or will) be their animal of choice…

* But Who Would Be Next?: Perhaps one of the reasons Mayor Frank Jackson is reluctant — which is putting it mildly — to get rid of his Special Assistant Marty Flask and Safety Director Michael McGrath has to do with the question of who would replace them…

* The Other Form of Police Brutality: Police brutality is most commonly thought of as a physical act of violence against an individual — be it a beating administered via fist, boot, or nightstick; placing handcuffs on a suspect so tightly circulation is cut off; Tazering; shooting; and the ultimate, killing — but there is another form of “violence” that can have a more lasting and devastating effect…

The Arts Tax Comes Up for Renewal This Fall. Will the County Support Its Arts Scene?
If you want an arts tax try taxing soft drinks. It’s more inclusive. Going after the 20% of adults that smoke requires them to do the heavy lifting for arts funding. Voting for a minority to support the arts (in my opinion) was a cheap shot at punishing smokers. (I don’t smoke personally). To me it’s about being fair…

PHOTOSTREAM: Al Stewart Charms The Kent Stage
Al Stewart is always charming and spell-binding in concert, and Dave Nachmanoff adds incredible texture to the live performances of his songs. It is almost (almost — but not quite, of course) like seeing a full band perform them…
