Cleveland Style

Having our own style and not kowtowing to anyone’s expectations has allowed NEO’s artists, chefs, entrepreneurs and creatives to flourish. Now it’s time for downtown retail to follow.

Donald Shingler has more style in his little finger than most can muster in a lifetime. His Fashion Week Cleveland celebrates 10 beautiful years, and we’re partying with him. Now his Cleveland Retail Commission is ready to give downtown retail a kick in its sweet tush. Read on, then remember to thank him in a few years. And while you’re at it, thank Kyle and the good folks at NEORSD for partnering on Mitchell’s new green infrastructure project on W. 25th, then check out her talk at Old Stone.

Looking for the best internship of your life? CoolCleveland is hiring, if you’ve got enough style and substance to be a 21st century correspondent. And if you’re looking to keep up with Ferguson, social justice, and Mayor Jackson’s toplofty travails, Mansfield’s your man. Because, to tell the truth, it’s just not our style to look the other way. –Thomas Mulready

There’s a lot of buzz in CLE for so many good reasons: innovation, restaurants, technology, breweries, full capacity in the downtown living quarters, music, entrepreneuralism, festivals, healthcare, theatre, museums, bars, sports, nightclubs, universities and so much more.

But there’s one area that hasn’t quite caught up with these other areas in the city that have a solid foundation: retail shopping…

While the topics varied, Mayor Jackson hit education hard in his Sate of the City address last week at the Cleveland Convention Center. The Mayor heralded the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for raising graduation rates, in addition to turning the tides on the atmosphere inside schools across the board.

“People feel better about the system,” said Jackson when addressing the changing views of public education in Cleveland. With upcoming construction projects, increased graduation rates, increased parent interactions, and increased arts education programs, it’s hard not to think we’re headed in the right direction. Keep up the good work CMSD!

For the first time in 100 years, United Way of Greater Cleveland did not set a goal for their annual campaign. But that didn’t stop them from breaking last year’s total by a half a million dollars.

CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready caught up with United Way’s President and CEO Bill Kitson, along with Paul Matsen, Cleveland Clinic’s Chief Marketing Officer and co-chair of this year’s campaign at their huge annual meeting.

With a renewed focus on Education, Income and Health, the new United Way helps the community find ways to give, advocate and volunteer to help others in need.

At the Guggisberg Swiss Inn in Charm, near Millersburg, you can experience an old-fashioned Victorian sleigh ride.

Imagine navigating off Ohio 39 in Amish country onto dirt roads winding past saw mills and lumber yards, through rolling farmland and intersections that pop up out of nowhere, where people wave from snowmobiles and Amish buggies sit alongside neat farmhouses…

The Saturday before “Bloody Sunday” President Barack Obama journeyed to Selma, Alabama to make one of the most impassioned and inspiring — not to mention longest) speeches of his tenure as a resident of the Oval Office…

More coverage from Mansfield Frazier:

* The Elite One-Percent Speak: A recent PD editorial that 45 local powerbrokers lent their names to — in spite of the fact only one (or perhaps two) of them live in Cleveland — called for continued support of Mayor Frank Jackson, who is staring down the barrel of a recall effort…

* Ferguson — Not a Complete Loss: The fact that Darrin Wilson, the cop who killed Michael Brown didn’t get indicted by the feds isn’t as big of a loss as it seemed at first blush…

* Bloody Sunday – A Personal Retrospective: March 7, 1965 — a day now widely known as “Bloody Sunday” — dramatically changed the Civil Rights Movement, and irrevocably altered my life in the process…

* Optics Matter, Words Matter: Those old enough to recall “The Rumble in the Jungle,” the a historic boxing event held in 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), that pitted the undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman against former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali as the challenger, might also recall an incident that occurred at the airport when the champ arrived in the country…

* Could There be a Method to the Mayor’s Madness?: Over breakfast with a fellow farmer the other morning (we occasionally get together to solve all of the world’s problems in under two hours) of course the subject that’s on the minds of most thinking folks in Cleveland — police brutality and the consent decree currently being negotiated between the city and the Department of Justice (DOJ) — came up and he put forth a provocative theory…

MANSFIELD: The Elite One-Percent Speak
Well said. I was sort of floored by the editorial as well. My favorite part was their unsupported suggestion that poverty has declined during jackson’s tenure. A simple Google search will tell you it has risen more than 5%. Do they really not know what the trends are with poverty in the city?…
Angie Schmitt

CareerTOOLBOX #43: Whiplash
Alex, bravo and a standing ovation! I enjoyed your clarion call to aspire to greatness. Whenever I am asked to speak at a career day, I often ask the class that I’m addressing, “Does anybody here want to be average, mediocre?”…
Peter Lawson Jones

MANSFIELD: Something Is Rotten In City Hall
Jackson is only loyal to his management not city employees. Concerning the rank and file he’s not as bad as Mike White in his distain but there certainly is no loyalty. I know. I work here…
