Hot Winter 02.18.15 – 02.25.15

02.18-02.25.15
Hot Winter

There’s no other way to describe it. The records we’re breaking go beyond the temperatures. Inspired artists from 78th Street Studios to Chagrin Falls to Ohio City are throwing caution to the wind chill and hosting some of the hottest events of the year. Pinball parlor Superelectric mount a Clevo-centric fashion show with bands, jewelry and a runway show in one of CoolCleveland’s coolest CoolNeighborhoods. Is 78th Street Studios a neighborhood? Try to convince us it’s not.

If it’s February, it must be Brite Winter Festival, now in its 6th year, sporting an inner tube playpen. Marty has the video with ED Brian Horsburgh. Cleveland’s original Dead Boy Cheetah Chrome is back in town, as is Yefim Bronfman. Klezmer Guy Bert Stratton will smoke ’em out at Nighttown, and the Lakeland Jazz Fest is back for its 43rd year. The Wild & Scenic Film Fest lets you embrace the great outdoors from the warm confines of the CMNH, while the Acrobats of Cirque-tacular kick off the season at Chagrin Arts.

Get out of that hot kitchen and sample the special menus during Downtown Cleveland Restaurant Week, the macaroons at Coquette Patisserie, or the flick PlanEat, screening @ the Serendipity Space in Cle Hts. Fight the Frost at CanalWay Center and savor Mississippi Heat at the Happy Days Lodge. A hotter winter I don’t recall. –Thomas Mulready

With the announcement that a pair of local organizations, along with a local attorney, have scheduled a series of community meetings to gauge the depth of public dissatisfaction over Mayor Frank Jackson’s handling of the recently initiated consent decree negotiations between the City of Cleveland and the U.S. Justice Department, the whole dynamic could change in regards to the ongoing debate being engaged in around town…

* The Killings Just Keep on Coming: Americans, as a group, suffer from an acute case ADD “Attention Deficit Disorder.” Or, perhaps more appropriately, a mass case of “shortness of attention span.” In a world of instant everything — from text messaging to selfies sent immediately after the photo is taken, with little thought given to the content — our minds are increasingly becoming conditioned to seek out the next big thing at lightening speed…

* Policing the Right Way: When three really stupid teenaged boys — and let’s face it, most teenaged boys are really, really stupid — crossed paths with a Cleveland cop at 11:30 pm on West 56th and Denison Avenue on a recent Friday night, the results could have been deadly…

* A Rigged System: It’s not hard to envision the sly smiles on the faces of Steve Loomis (the boss of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association) and the crypto-fascists he steadfastly supports, as he responded to the news that Tamir Rice’s 14-year-old sister, Tajai, has filed a complaint with the city’s Office of Professional Standards and Civilian Review Board in regards to how she was treated by cops when she attempted to run to the side of her dying brother to give him the comfort and aid his cold-hearted killer was callously denying him….
