Dentist/Sax Player Phillip “Doc” Martin Plays It Smooth at Nighttown

Sat 2/1 @ 8:30PM

For those of you who like your jazz soft and easy, it’s “smooth jazz” weekend at Nighttown.

Phillip “Doc” Martin, who juggles two careers — as a sax player and a dentist —glides into town with his alto sax and a catalogue of four albums to draw upon.

Martin grew up in Florida, where he took advantage of the music programs in the Broward County public schools before moving on to the University of Central Florida to study music, recording his debut CD in 2003.

Then he went to dental school at Howard University in Washington D.C. where he still lives and works. And he’s got a new CD called Good Day at Work. It’s unclear if that was a good day of filling cavities or blowing his horn. Maybe both. His graceful music is a tad too lively to be a Novocaine substitute, but its relaxed melodiousness would certainly work well in any dentist’s office to put edgy patients at ease.

Tickets are $20.
