South River Vineyard & Winery + Red Eagle Distillery

Tars

South River Vineyard and Winery is known as the church winery because the owners of the boutique winery relocated a Portage County church to the site. The winery once hosted weddings but the old church pews are now used exclusively for wine afficionados to taste the great blends crafted by winemaker Gene Sigel.

This winery boasts the most gorgeous views of vineyards in Geneva wine country from the back Green-revival-style porch and the vineyards are one of the largest vinifera growers in the area, at over 70 acres.

Next door to South River Winery, the Sigels have opened Red Eagle Distillery, which makes whiskey using time-honored distilling traditions. The micro distillery focuses on bourbon made of non-genetically modified corn.

The 250-gallon copper still is powered by a propane-fired boiler and the cooker heats the grains with water for fermentation. A renovated 1800s barn houses the distillery, and the wood beams and interior wood walls and ceiling have been sandblasted to showcase their beauty.
