PHOTOSTREAM: A Visit to Rising Star Coffee

Today we stopped by the Ohio City Firehouse on W. 29th Street (across from the Transformer Station), and said hello to Rising Star Coffee owner Kim Jenkins, who gave up a job managing engineers at Lockheed Martin in Orlando to roast the best beans in Cleveland. Fair trade, we’d say.

We watched him with his hand swirling the beans as they cooled after dropping from the roaster. Then Christophe brewed a small vacuum pot of coffee with water kept boiling on a Bunsen burner. Bags of green beans from Guatemala, and 5-gallon buckets of roasted beans were scattered haphazardly around their workspace. The room was hot, even in the middle of a sub-zero winter. The place smelled heavenly.
